iD .map format for levels? slow?
well, I heard any type of BSP isnt good for outdoor areas. Maybe by using a terrain engine and .map or .bsp for objects/buildings?

this is true, since BSP''s strength lies in using "walls" to occlude things that dont need to be drawn. in an outdoor area you''d probably want to use an octree/portal setup. you could always have BSP support for indoor areas, but if they seamlessly integrate with your outdoor areas you may as well make them portal based as well.
