Where can I go to learn how to write my own simple web based forum system like the one here? What tools are used, what books, I can''t find a good source on google.

I once wrote a very functional BBS using PHP and mySQL using nothing but the manuals on the websites. If you are new to using PHP and mySQL though, Web Monkey had some good tutorials on using PHP and mySQL together.

What other ways could a forum be created? Could you create a forum using java script, or VB script, or ASP or something? From what I gather, the database is the important thing, and the interface can be made from anything that can access and display the data in neat little rows and columns. Is this basically just fancy HTML?

Yes this page you are looking at is just HTML, or at least, that''s all that it needs to be. If there''s some javascript or something, that''s beside the point since it has nothing to do with the forums.

You are right that the database part is the important part. You can write a program to handle the database calls and output the proper HTML in whatever you want (PHP, C/C++, perl, python, lisp, whatever).
