Problems with texture sizes

Hi there fellows! I''m new here and just an artist, not a programmer, so please be patient if I''m telling weird stuff . Here''s my problem: At the moment we ( Polyfrag ) are developing an OpenGL Version of our former game Gunocide2Ex ( the working title is Gunocide2 Final )... so I have to convert the older graphics into Textures... my problem is... when I convert the background e.g. into a 512x512 big texture, it will be stretched ( as the game resolution actually is 1024x768 ) and leaves an very unwelcomed effect... so what can I do to avoid this effect ???
