OK, the games ancient(ish), but this is driving me buggy. Does anyone know how the background terrain in the original Atari Battlezone was generated? Many thanks in advance A5

The background is just some zig-zag lines that look vaguely like a mountain range. It wasn''t generated from anything. Is there another point to this question?

Sigh... it wasn''t just a bunch of random zig-zag lines, there was structure and it looked pretty good.

I''d like to recreate it as part of an updated version I''m working on as a learning exercise.

Posting the request was a long-shot, but I was hoping that someone would *know* whether the lines making up the background were a predefined line or generated via an algorithm.

A5

You''re probably better off defining the line yourself, so that you can actually design the horizon to your liking.

If anyone would know, it would be the devs over at www.mame.net

Since MAME emulates Asteroids (EDIT: I mean Battlezone...I don't know what I was thinking.), there's a good chance someone there knows the inner workings of the game. Still the actual algorithm may be asking a bit much. Can't hurt to ask.

Who said anything about Asteroids?! He''s asking about Battlezone, the old 3D tank game.

Uh...yeah. I meant Battlezone. They're both vector games made by Atari, so I guess my mind wandered for a bit while typing my reply.

MAME emulates Battlezone too, so the suggestion is still valid.

LOL

This could be how little percentage of bugs are introduced in software!!!

Just kidding.

It probably is at least one reason for bugs...

I love the old vector-based arcade games and I still play Battlezone, Asteroids, and Tempest on a pretty regular basis.
I think what got me thinking of Asteroids is a commercial that''s been on the Sci-Fi channel lately showing actual gameplay and sound-effects from Asteroids. It''s some stupid SUV commercial, but it sticks in my head anyway...
