Lost devices in DX8.

Hi everyone. Would someone be kind enough to tell me how exactly one has to retrieve a lost device in Direct3D8 and if there are other things to do (eg. device verifications in Render())?? I think a mere sample code or even a nice URL should do it, so don't bother to give too much explanations if you dont feel like. Thanks to all in advance. BTW, could someone also explain to me how you could put a kind of transparent vail(I dont know whether its the right word), like a curtain on the whole screen, like the one you can see in ChronoCross while the game is paused. I assume I'll have to retrieve the picture already displayed and put my "transparent curtain" on top of it, but I got no clue as how I gotta proceed. Thanks again for your help. First you have to call Reset() on the device. Then you have to reload all your resources that were stored in graphics card memory (i.e. everything that wasn''t created with D3DPOOL_MANAGED).
