D3DX and D3DIM - almost one and the same ?

well im making it ezy for u guys this time - its just a simple yes no qn if u initialize your 3d app with d3dx can u still use all the functionality and functions of d3dim ? my interpretation is yes since d3dx is just a bunch of helper functions that hide all the indepth and involved initialisation and matrice stuff. am i rite ?
