It sure IS powerful, because you have control, it is supported for most platforms and all.
But, not to start a flame war, if you only want 3D and compatibility, go on with OGL. If you want more control over buffering and the environment (sound, input, 2D bitmaps), use Dx.

In 3D, I really don''t know what is the more powerful. Dx is the most up-to-date API, and OGL needs a complete facelift and added feature.

(( That''s why I''m waiting OpenML, which will be in complete competition with Dx, and multiplatform. *Sigh* in a year and a half or so, I think... ))
