This is probably some stupid trivial little thing but I cannot figure it out for the life of me. My d3d8.h and d3dx8.h are both being included from my DXSDK directory, but my dinput.h is being included from the Visual Studio common directory. This is causing my compiler to not even recognize the LPDIRECTINPUT8 object. Can anyone help me with this problem?

In VC++ 6, go to Tools->Options->Directories, and make sure that the DXSDK directory is first in the list. In other versions / compilers, check for an option that changes the order of the directories in which to search for include files.

If you''re DXSDK include path is C:\DXSDK\Include you can use
#include "C:\DXSDK\Include\dinput.h"
instead of
#include <dinput.h>
