I am trying to do this: (*winClass).hbrBackground = GetStockObject(NULL_BRUSH); GetStockObject, as I am told in my book, is what I should use to set this parameter of the WNDCLASSEX struct. I use VC++ .NET. It says that they are incompatible types and I can see that it''s looking for a HBRUSH but why does the book tell me to do it this way? Please help, Thanks.

Your book uses C and in C the conversion is automatic. In C++ you have to cast it yourself like this: (HBRUSH)GetStockObject(NULL_BRUSH)
