Gamma correction
I''m wondering how this is done. From what I understand there is no OpenGL function to handle this and it is the responsibility of windows. Is this right? And if so how do you go about implementing it?

Yes. It''s true. The gamma correction is part of the DirectDraw. The IDirectDrawGammaControl interface provides the functions. See the DirectX SDK.
