Point Sprite or Quad

Using DirectX 9, what would be better? Hardware accelerated point sprites for a 2D image or using a quad with a texture wrap? Can you scale the point sprite as to fit a size suitable to the image pasted on the point sprite? What would be a more optimal method ( in performance ) ? ThanX!
