The book Programming Role-Playing Games with DirectX takes you through it if your willing to buy. It''s not just for programming RPGs, very recommend.

DirectX has built in support for the .x file format, and you can get an exporter for 3dsMAX with the DXSDK. I'm sure there are tutorials in the DX documentation.
