Need Help
Well, people. I''m in quite a harsh situation. I''m 14 and I''ve been programming my whole life(just about, from when I was 5). Now, I''m not gonna get all braggy and start that whole thing, I just want you to know who your dealing with. Because, frankly, I let my programs do all the talk(everyone else should do that too). Anyway, enough bio, my problem:
I need to get skilled in programming in c/c++ fast. I need to learn DirectX and OpenGl and do lots of work with 3d. I also need to handle movies and sound and music and aaaaah! I''m with a company who has people totally awesome at what they do. Now, here I am, only skilled in Visual Basic and just starting to learn *Direct Draw* in it. Now, everyone has been impressed with my work so far... but, rationally I think its just because they haven''t seen anybody else program. So, my question is, where do I start? What''s the best route(combining fastest and best *useful* knowledge) to my goal? My company''s goal right now is to develop a 3d rpg for the computer and port it to console as well.
Well, thanks for any of your thoughts. I must say I started reading Trick of the Windows Game Programming Gurus and its an extremely good book.

I was just curious to know what programming company hires a 14 year old to program games for them ?
And you say that they think your work is good......but you think that is only because they haven''t seen anyone else program ?
What kind of company is this ? I am guessing it is just a few people online who decided to try and program a game and are looking for anyone to help.......

A great OpenGL site is http://nehe.gamedev.net -- it has all kinds of cool tutorials and stuff. Another site would be
http://shockonline.homestead.com/openglgameprogramming.html
It''s my site, but check it out--it has some tutorials on creating 3d engines, OpenGL and other stuff...but I don''t think that you''ll be able to get skilled in C/C++, DirectX, and OpenGL fast (depending on your definition of fast). It''s not that hard, but it takes awhile (a few months, at least).
He probably means an ameteur game programming group. I don''t think any company would hire a 14 year old that doesn''t know too much visual programming. Not saying that it''s bad, but I am 14 as well and I am currently programming a 3D RPG with my "company" over the internet.

I suggest:
1. Teach yourself C in 24 hours
2. Tricks of the Windows Game Programming Gurus
3. Spells of Fury (old 1996 book, but it''s pretty good for learning the basis of DirectX.

Heck, I''m leading a "company". Thankfully, it''s just me and a couple of friends. And I can just ride a bike to any of their houses...

...oh yeah, i also forgot neonstar entertainment also... yep, dat''s mine... designing a killer game right now...
First things first, I think you should fix the link on your site. It links to http://www.arkonstudios.com/www.arkonstudios/radium when it should obviously be http://www.arkonstudios.com/radium. The book I learned C++ with was Teach Yourself C++ in 21 days, and I learned DX game programming in "Windows Game Programming for Dummies" (same author as tricks of the windows game programming gurus so they are very similar). I learned MFC and windows API calls from various internet websites, including this one. If you care I''m 16, but I''ve taken the last year off of programming (by off I mean not programming everyday) to research more engineering parts of computers (Hardware such as hard drives and networks). Well, I hope that helped.
