what''s the next step? Assuming I realize a full, commercial-grade game engine, that''s stable, portable, fast, fun, and so on, what the hell should I do with it? Approach an existing company? Get venture capital? Mortgage my parents'' house?

Well, if you want to sell it, the next logical step would be to make some state-of-the-art demo that demonstrates what you mentionned: stable, portable, fast, cutting-edge effects, etc..
