Stencil Buffer Question ?

Hi All. I am playing with the Stencil buffer at the moment as I am using to it to reveal the level as jumpman moves about.. Is there any way to draw into the stencil buffer without it appearing on the main screen.. I am drawing a large circle behind jumpman as he moves but I can see the white blob behind him. I worked out that glColorMask(FALSE, FALSE, FALSE, FALSE); would still set the stencil mask and not draw the main screen which is exactly what I want but is there a better method to do this ?? What''s wrong with glColorMask(FALSE, FALSE, FALSE, FALSE)? It is fast and simple.

There is no other fast and simple way I'm aware of.

Edit: What does your signature mean?! You're under construction?
