Yeah after many abandoned projects and failed game attempts, I have decided to go back to the roots and code a nice 2D platform game. But before I get started I got a couple of questions 1 - Would it be efficient to code it in OpenGL? 2 - Is it possible to load animated gif''s and map them to a quad?

1. Yes. Though there are plenty of libraries already written out there tailored to doing 2d graphics which utilize the modern hardware. (A few built on OpenGL even)

2. I''d suggest large images of layed out sprites.
EG: 200 frames of a man walking, layed out onto a few 512x512 images, which you reference by coordinates.
Youll have to be somewhat effecient with memory anyway, so no use loading an ugly old format, and using code to turn it into those dang big images - just go straight to what you need.

Anyway, just my 0.02c
