Terrain divisions on file

I''m making a ROAM terrain engine, but I am trying to get it to output things to file right now instead of to the screen. What i''m trying to output to file is the actual "diamonds" and triangles...the faces and polygons. Thus, the files should be black and white, with nothing but black lines that make up a huge group of triangles... For reference, check the ROAM paper, found at http://www.llnl.gov/graphics/ROAM/ and look at the Figure 2 on the first page...it shouldn''t be that big...just a 1024 x 1024 black and white file, but those "triangles" should be there. I''ve got file input nailed down, been following the tutorial on Gamasutra...but i''m not sure how to pull that one off.
