Im using triangle strips to draw a surface (water) my algorithm builds the water surface mesh in a zig zag motion (start from upper left to right, then to the left, then to the right...etc). this apparantly affects the way the polygons are culled. when drawn with the cull mode set to None, then all is fine. i dont see any efficient way to build the mesh while keeping either a clockwise or counter-clockwise motion. any tips?

just worry about your first triangle, if it is CW and you''re culling CCW your strip will be drawn properly. This is because with a strip the ordering alternates, there''s no way around that, so the culling mode alternates too, you just worry about the first tri, like Namethatnobodyelsetook said.
