Decals (tire tracks, bullet holes etc.)

Recommended Posts

Hey, How are decals, such as tire marks left behind a car, or bullet holes, etc. normally done? Are they done by pasting another piece of geometry where you want the decal and texturing that? Or is it done with some funky multi-texturing or something? Or is it done some other way? Thanks, CYer, Blitz

Both. For things like bullet holes you would create a small quad to apply the bullet hole texture to. That quad will either just be positioned at the position where the bullet hit, or more advanced apps will actually clip the quad to the world geometry. The decal geometry is drawn with a z-offset so that it sits slightly above the geometry that its applied to.

The other method is to actually draw the decal into the texture of the object you''re applying it to. This has the advantage of not creating any more geometry, but it has the disadvantage of requiring unique texturing. I dont know of any apps that actually use this method..
