About the stencil test?

Recently , I am learning NEHE''s OpenGL tutorials.In lesson 27, the tutorial tells me to use the stencil test to case shadow on the object.I look in MSDN Libaray,but I just can''t find out how stencil test operates.So can anyone tell me more about it? Many thanks!

You controll the stencil buffer with the function
glStencilMask(), glStencilOp() and glStencilFunc()
