compiling vertex shader codes....

is there any way to find if there was any syntax error while sending some vertex shader code to glProgramString(). Perhaps the best way to find it out is simply to see if the program displays any geometry or not but that could happen for two reasons.... 1) Logical Error and 2) compile-time error. How do i filter out the "compile-time" errors. Is there any functions ( like glGetProgramError() ) or something ?
