Gennerating terrains

I whant to generate terrains in Bryce 4 and loaded with Opengl. Can someone point me in the right direction. I'm interested in what type of file I should export and how can I loaded in Opengl using VC++. Or could somebody tell me what is the best way on gennrating terrains. Any help is wellcome. search on "heightmaps" these are the easiest, although somewhat "limited" method of terrain visualization...using some arbitrary mesh could get complicated
