Does anyone have any idea how to achieve the effect of having a pre rendered image of say a room where the user can look around in all directions? it''s a bit difficult to explain but it is the effect used in games such as Sherlock Holmes:Mystery of the mummy.

Render scene to texture in 6 directions and save them as cubemap.

this is an effect called a ''skybox''. basically you put the camera in a cube, texture the cube with textures generated by rendering your scene from the pov of the camera, in the 6 basic directions (up,down, left, right, back, forward), render the cube with depth checking/writing off and an identity view matrix, and then render anything else in your scene. the cube can be arbitrarily sized because it will appear the same reguardless of size.

you might also want to look up effects such as ''skydomes'' and ''skyplanes'' since they are similar to skyboxes.
