D3DLVERTEX - cant get them to display

I seem to get this problem quite a lot and i think it is to do with which renderstates i set. When i tried using the lit vertex structure i set the VERTEXCOLOR and SPECULARENABLE both to true. Yet nothing is displayed on the screen still - this happens very reguarly i spend heaps of time just doing trial and error on heaps of different render states till something displays. When i render, i make my view matrix with my cameras position and the projection matrix is set. I just made the world transform matrix the identity matrix and set it. have i done everything rite?

One possible problem is that you aren''t making a light to illuminate the surface - the surroundings are pitch black.

Hey! It''s not lights.
OK! First clear the back buffer with some color other than
black. Then you can see your object in black color.
The reason is you have set the Render state LIGHTING to TRUE.
Disable it by SetRenderState(D3DRENDERSTATE_LIGHTING,FALSE);
Bingo! There you go.
If you don''t set it to FALSE, D3D set every D3DLVERTEX color to black, irrespective of color specified in the color field.
