I am starting to use VB to make some simple internet and network tools and I want to know if VB will allow me to make a program that can stay open on the desktop or incoporate it into the desktop and monitors in real-time all connections to my computers, any open ports, and things of that nature. The whole 9 yards basically. IS this something that can be done in real time?

Which version of vb?
6 has bad native support for server-type apps, because it doesn't natively support multiple threads.

On the other hand, on vb.net, this type of app is moderately easy to create.

In either way, search info on 'Socket programming'.

EDIT:
Changed 'very easy' to 'moderately easy'

I am using VB6 right now but I am expecting to upgrade to .NET in about two weeks. I am just getting the standard version, that is all I can afford

I dont really want to do anything with this project. I just want to see what I can do with it. Once I am finished I have no clue what I will do with it. :D
