Fall Damage

Ive been creating a side scrolling adventure for about a year and a half now, and I was wondering how someone would calculate fall damage. I have tried about 6 different formulas, but they all end up killing the player. Can someone help??

just make it a function of the velocity of the player when it hits the ground. If the velocity is small enough, no damage should be done. If it''s high enough, the player should automatically die. Otherwise, do something like subtract the length of the velocity vector times a constant from the players health. They may live or they may die depending on how fast they are going and how much health they have. you could also use the square root of the lenght, or the square of the length, or any other function you feel like.
