Surface & Texture confusion

Ive created a 2D rectangle panel using vertices. I have a single .bmp containing my frames of animation which I want to use as the texture. I know how to seperate the frames from the .bmp but do I need to convert them to a surface buffer or can I put the frame onto my 2D panel as a texture? SetTexture() method puts whole .bmp onto panel, not what I want? What functions should I be looking at?
