Text handling in 2d games

Hi, Does anyone have any advice/strategies for handling text in a 2d game using directDraw? The game will be fairly text intensive and I understand that using win32 text drawing functions is very slow. Should I create a bitmap of the characters I need and blt from it render the text? Thanks.

I didn''t bother. I made my own text class and it seemed to work fine. Although, a bitmap text wrapper class would be helpful.
