'Collision' with a solid, massive bar.
Imagine I have a long iron bar with mass, length and thus a moment of inertia, floating motionless in a vacuum. Then a bullet hits it at some point on its length (not the midpoint). I assume I want to treat the bullet as an impulse but what exactly will happen? The bar must gain linear motion to conserve momentum but how much of the bullet''s kinetic energy will go to linear and rotational KE in the bar (assuming the bullet ceases to be worth considering after the collision)?
