The best way on generating terrains

I whant to generate terrains in Bryce 4 and loaded with Opengl. Can someone point me in the right direction. I''m interested in what type of file I should export and how can I loaded in Opengl using VC++. Or could somebody tell me what is the best way on generating terrains. Any help is wellcome.

Search for height maps, If you haven''t coded any terrain engines before I think a Bryce exporter seams like a great leap to take. Search here on gamedev.net because terrain generation has been discussed a million times and a lot of people has a whole lot of great ideas!

Research any work by Jason Shankel specifically, after taking a visit to vterrain.org.

Several of his most noted heightmap generation algorithms include: Fault Formation, Midpoint Displacement, and Particle Deposition.

All have their own practicalities and are discussed in length both within Game Programming Gems (I) and on the net (TM).
