2d game backgrounds

I am creating a 2D style game with backgrounds like the original Zelda (once you get to the side of the screen the next screen moves over). My problem is that I want to create a matrix (lets just say 10 By 10) each representing a screen. I don’t have much experience with creating, reading or using matrixes in any way. Anyone know of an article I can read? Or have any ideas on where to start? OR any better way of doing this? Thanks

What you need to use is a 2D array. The type of game you describe is a tile-based engine. HERE !
