Bubble physics

Hi, I''m new here so I apologise if this topic has already been covered. I''m writing a clone of the Taito classic bubble bobble. I have a major problem, I can''t make sense of the way the bubbles interact with each other. I''ve searched but I can''t find any Bubble Bobble code or any information about their physics. Once the bubbles are in [what I call] an attractor area, they just hover up and down, but only two bubbles can comfortably fit into one attractor area. Once a third [or more] bubbles try to enter the area some very strange stuff starts to happen, they move around, get pushed by each other, overlap each other to various degrees. It seems there is some system of chained/built-up force [the more bubbles pushing the more force], and that they don''t like overlapping so will only do so when forced to, but I''m floundering around wildly here. Can anyone give me a clue here? Thanks, Rudolf.

I once had the same thoughts as you when I was looking at some rough foam..I didn't search further though But here's a link, that could at least explains part of the effect :
