'Time of Day' Terrain Lighting

What would be the best way of lighting a terrain that would be subjected to different light intensities, colours and light directions, such as that of a complete 00:00 - 23:59 cycle? I was thinking of a lightmap that is somehow updated using the spare clock cycles??? Slope Lighting is nice but it only works in 45 degree increments as far as I''ve heard. Any ideas/suggestions?

Think a bit and slope lighting can be extended to any direction tho it''s a bit more complex. But still a few instructions per texel (or height sample as you wish)
