Normal Maps and Sobel Filter

Dear All, I''m writing a pixel shader(a celluar texture function if you are intrested), that I want to use to generate a normal map. IIRC I can create the texture function, then use a Sobel filter to generate the normal map from this. Is this correct, or am I remembering what I''ve read wrong? if you want to make bumpmapping perhaps? I''m sorry, I don''t know what cellular texturing is.. Anyway, I used the exact same thing for that. and the sobel filter was the minimum:

[-1 0 +1]
