sidescrolling engines
greetings developers
i was looking on the net for an arcade sidescrolling game engine.
something similar to adventure game studio.(i am to lazy to learn programming - but i could handle some scripting).i am more artsy.
so - if you know a free 2d game developing program please let me know.
thanks.
keep up the good work

you won't want a game engine.. think game generator. an engine is just the section of source code that a game uses to drive its content forward. this would require programming knowledge for you to use.
a search on google quickly brought me to this site ...
http://gamedev.sourceforge.net/
never underestimate the power of a good search engine.
edit > just realized the title of the program i linked to. ironic isn't it? *snicker*

looks like the thing.
i had troubles nailing the right term for the program.
funny.just realized that it''s the same one i''ve lost some time ago.
thanks.
btw...is there an undergroud game you can recommend - say an example how far in quality amateurs can go.
cheers.
(if you have some advices - please.)

use google
try stuff like amature games, indie games, free games

if you''re not sure what words to use on a search try thesaurus.com. and don''t allways worry about spelling errors. google can spot those easily.

I think you could check The Game Factory (TGF) or MMF. Don''t know how good (or bad) they are but I think you can easily make a sidescroll game with these "game-creator" softwares.

Have you considered joining a team as an artist? If your work is decent you can probably find one, there are plenty of people out there who wanna program but aren''t exactly the best artists (including myself) that wouldn''t mind some help.
a program such as the one he was looking for would help him to build a portfolio to show teams. art and art made for game engines are two different deals.
another thing you could do for a portfolio is create oldskool doom wads. i''m pretty sure they don''t require much programming know how.

hey...
thanks for the tips.
the thing is...i have a career outside game industry in plan.as pretencious as it may sound
game stuff is more of a hobby. even if i could i don''t think i would join a team - or try and do something comercial. i don''t like the way the industry going.
besides- once you start getting money for something you do - the magic goes away easiliy.
so it''ll be gamecreator and me.if i ever come around.
i doubt i''ll make any wads. i like sprites better.
actually i doubt i''ll make anything.with the university and jobs on the side...
anyway - thanks for the advices. made me think
cheers.
