Hash?

WTF is a "hash" of a file exactly? I''ve figured out that it''s a value which is pretty much unique for a given piece of data. Correct? Googling only turned up a couple of sites about creative drug usage, so if someone could point me to a resource, it''d be great! You are correct except that it is not unique. IThe value is used to organize or find data, or to quickly check if two sets of data are the same.
