What type of window is a virtual frame buffer?

Hi, I''m trying to write a simple raytracer (not real time) and am still struggling with the basics. When I call the fuction render_pic() what window is opened to write out the bitmap and how is it displayed? Should i use an opengl window or one from the win32 api? I am targeting windows systems. Any info about these things would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

A normal window should do.
OpenGL or DirectX is not suited well to this kind of slow, but precise operation.
I recommend gdi in this case (very rare thing for me to do).
