Soundprogramming /platformindependent

I have always used Windows, so I have never had a problem with platformindependent stuff (DX does most things for me). However, I wonder how to make a soundengine for audio playback (and perhaps 3D). There''s always OpenAL. Similar to OpenGL but for audio. Should be able to find some stuff on the creative website.
