Make an online directory listable?

I have this directory in my webspace called images, and I want browsers to be able to automatically list all the items in that folder when I navigate to it. What am I supposed to do to allow that? [edited by - Promit on October 10, 2003 5:36:52 PM]

I think some web servers allow viewing the directory tree if there is no index.(htm, html, php, etc) file in the directory. Most turn this option off though. I have a php script to list only files of a certain type somewhere on my computer. If you send me a quick e-mail I might be able to find it and send it back to you.

Is it running Apache? If they setup the directories which you can access to be able to override "Indexes" you can create an .htaccess file in the correct directory to turn on the indexing. Something like this:

Options +Indexes

How the indexing output looks also depends how the httpd.conf file is setup and, like I said, whether it''s allowed or not also depends on how httpd.conf is setup.

If there''s an existing directory index (some form of index.ext is most common), I''m not sure how to disable showing it from .htaccess. If you look through the real documentation, you''ll find some other index configuration options you are allowed to mess with too.

I''ve never used Apache 2.x, just 1.3.x, so this is all pertaining to it...
