Laser special effect

Hi, This is probably a noob question but I was wondering how do you do special effects for lasers? I don''t really get how you would do it because it''s not a billboard, it''s not a particle system, and it''s definitely not a mesh... So how would you model something like that? As an example, there was a game a while ago by Psygnosis called Rollcage... They had a weapon which fired 2 lasers which would spin around each other like 2 interwinding threads. Here is the best screenshot I could find... it''s not that great but hopefully shows what''s going on Hmm, if anyone has any idea of how to model stuff like this I''d really appreciate any hints! The simplest thing would be to make it out of a bunch of elongated quads. If you want something more realistic you might have to go to shaders, but that screenshot just looks like a bunch of alpha blended quads with some larger particles where the glare is.

The laser effect your referring too in the screenshot is closer to lightning. so i suggest you look up poly-line quad strips.

basically, from a path you compute quads for each section of the path. the calculation for the quads is similair to making billboards but taking into consideration the viewing point and section of path.

good luck.

Awesome thanks a lot!
Yeah I figured it was some sort of composite made out of something like billboards but I''m not exactly sure what is a good way to represent its shape, and also how to get it to look good without any weird cracks or artifacts... ANyways now I have some specific term "polyline quad strips" to search for so that''ll help a lot I''m sure

Thanks again,

Raj
