Anybody who is interested in helping (or being) noobs

Recommended Posts

I am setting up a webpage (with forum) for all the gamemaking/programming noobs or people who have no experience but really really want to learn. I will except experts but we do want to keep this a noob site, experts will be there to help and (some) moderate....If you feel suited for this site or would like to help moderate post here with ideas or just that you would be interested...I will open the site up to all if I see interest

It is exactly because of comments like that, besides my site is meant to be just for noobs... and not just game programming noobs but programming noobs. Here it is filled more with expert talk and that then what I think really would help the noobs

There you are....you can now sign up at will....I will be highly moderating the amount of flamers (like AP) and spammers but besides that the forum is almost no rules

How would a site of pure newbies be helpful? The point of these forums is for experts (or at least fairly experienced people) to help newbies along, but you make it sound as if those with experience aren't even welcome. A congregation of confused n00bs isn't going to at all useful, IMO. Plus, since this place is such a huge community with a large amount of pooled knowledge, I think you may be taking the incredible speed and helpfulness of most of the replies here for granted.

The only real flames I have seen on these forums(save Help wanted) is when someone says something tht they havent even researched or dosent seem willing to put any work forward. I for one am guility of posting like that in the past. If you come here seeming like you want to learn and not just be given soemthing for nothing you are ussally responded too with help except with a couple exceptions but EVERY forum has it flammers no matter what.... it happens nad will always happen. Iam not saying dont do your forum or that it is a bad idea iam just saying the reason there is a lot of flames here is people dont research before they ask.

Posts only annoy me when someone asks for something advanced but doesn''t even know the basics of the language they are using.

Other than that, I try to help who I can. A little politeness never hurt anybody. Flames only hurt.

But I thoght this is the place to come for the one stop shop and not have to search for hours for what I need to know. If I have to search forever then I might as well just go out and buy the books on the sbuject and learn that whay right.

You need to know what your asking. You cant just expect everyone to be able to interpret your angle. You also cant expect to be taken seriously when(not sying you specficially)you come in here and say crap like i dunno jack but i want to be uber game programmer tommrow. which a lot of people do or come across like. and those people get flamed... say you come to the forums like this

"Iam intrested in learning C++ and then DirectX, eventually getting to games, I have googled and check the beginners section and have some book ideas (list book ideas) do you think those would put me on the right track? and if not what suggestions would you have?"

Now that i dont think would have a flame response ... you can correct me if Iam wrong. But I dont belive Iam.

No, Actually I specifically say that some experts are welcome, I would just like to keep the jerky "I am better then you" types out, most experts will actually get moderator privliges once I trust them

Besides, my fourm is going to have a tutorial section which will slowly be devolped so it acctually is a ONE STOP shop for all programming needs, any thing that people ask will be either put into a FAQ or a tutorial/short tutorial

(Excuse the AP I am using a weird browser called Internet Explorer and I don;t know my password)

No, it isn''t the ''one stop shop.'' We''re not paid to help you. We''re not even here with the express purpose of helping you, like doing charity work. We help you because we are, on the whole, nice people; and we want to feel that the effort we put in to help you is not unnecessary. The more effort you put in to solving the problem yourself, the more effort we''ll be prepared to put in to match it.

At least part of that is because geeks (and most of us are) tend to love a challenge, and if you''ve researched it for an hour and *still* can''t fix it it''s probably a more interesting problem.

That's actually a good idea, you know. How do you think *we* have learned ?

That too is a good idea. I so wish gamedev had something like that....

Absolutely right! If you aren't willing to put out some effort to learn, why should we waste our time spoon-feeding you? You may think you can make progress this way, but I assure you that it's quite impossible. To be frank, your questions aren't showing any more knowledge of programming than they did when you started.

twix that is fine for you to thank so but as long as I know that is not true is all that matters.

You sound offended. Sorry.

It''s very frustrating to watch you post here, though, since you seem to be more interested in cobbling together source code other people give you and taking credit for it than actually learning anything. But maybe it''s just me.
