Transparency in textures.

To create 32bit textures, try Paint Shop Pro. The latest version (8) isn''t that good and not very cheap, but version 7 is pretty powerfull and you can buy it new for as low as $50,- most likely, maybe even cheaper.

If you do not want to know how the ''black box'' works, get an image loading library like DevIL. I wrote my own TGA loader based on the tutorials on NeHe''s and GameTutorials. It''s pretty easy. Don''t worry.
