I have two cameras, one isometric camera for numbers and data rendering and the second a perspective camera for the scene. The numbers and data are above the scene, so should I draw the numbers first because they use the same z buffer and this way I will save rendering beneath the numbers and data?

I hope I havn''t missunderstood what you''re trying to do, but here goes...

The numbers and data you refer to: do you mean just scene statistics like fps, polygon count, etc?? If so, you don''t need a second camera just to draw text onto the screen. Look 3D Text sample that comes with the SDK. Or look at the ID3DXFont interface or the CD3DFont class that comes with the SDK.

If you''re trying to draw text on top of geometry (like a characters name in an online game) then you should use billboaring. There''s a sample in the SDK about billboarding and you can do a search in the forums to find out more about it.
