Usenet newsgroups don''t usually just "go down" without a warning and that goes double for long-standing ones like the ones in comp.lang.*.

I''d guess that the news server you''re using to read the groups is having a problem. If you need to read them right now, you can try Google Groups

They don''t go down at all, since they''re replicated across thousands of servers. The problem is more likely that chbfiv''s ISP is experiencing problems. Gamedev.net is not the place to ask.
