Edge blur routine?

Building a really simplistic planet generator, and I want to make shoreline depths comform a bit more realistically with the coastal areas. I can''t seem to find any source on this, so I must be looking in the wrong places. My current set of experiments hasn''t produced an effect I like either. Any ideas where to find an edge blur routine?

are you talking about a bitmap image format?
if so, just do a edge detect (-1 +1) (sobel whathaveyou) and threshold it to define ''edges'' to true or false
blur your image (+-1x,+-1y / 4) create new image by replacing (true) edge pixels with pixels from the blurred image, otherwise from original image.

needless to say you can change the filter sizes to suit your needs
