World Design
Hi, my friends and i are getting into designing our own MMORPG. We need a tip on what software to use to design the world and the characters.
We are either making its graphics like a game like runescape or more 2d like Ultima Online.
We need to know what software to get to design and construct the worlds for one.
Also what software to use to design the characters and monsters that will be involved in the world.
Your replies will be appreciated.

To model and render the characters you will need a program like 3DS Max or Maya
To create the world you will need to code it...

Where should i start if i want to start coding it. Would Microsoft Visual Studio.Net Pro 2003 do?
Also even if i want to design 2d chars i would need something like 3ds Max.

I suggest milkshape 3d for 3d characters or the gimp for 2d characters. It sounds like you''re on a budget and those are two cheap products that will do a good job. You''ll find links to both at my website on the link below.

We''re extremely lost when it comes to designing the world.

quote:i need some more detailed explanations.Well, what do you know how to do? Do you know any C++ (or other programming language). You do not even sound like you are sure if you want to go with 2D or 3D yet, so should I ask if you know which API you plan on using? To get more a more detailed response, I highly suggest a more detailed explaination of the problem.
To some of the specific questions that were asked:
Yes VS.NET will definatly ''do'' as your compiler.
No, you don''t need 3DS Max for 2D characters, use gimp as suggested or Photoshop if you don''t mind the cost.
There are a lot of articles and whatnot here on Gamedev that could probably be of use to you, depending on your level of knowledge, but you don''t seem to have indicated one as of yet.
I suggest that you start out with something easier, like tetris. You don''t even know where to start, how to start, let alone have the insight in building server software that is able to manage more then 25 connections without lagging everyone...
