Hello everyone! Just for fun, I would like to know a few things about the average programmer. I was going to put this thread in with general programming, but this one just seems better for it 1) If faced with a problem, how do you normally go about solving it? 2) We all get our days when motivation seems to be gone, what do you do when this happens and how do you re motivate your self? 3) What time do you normally goto sleep and wake up? 4) (for us younger people) Do you have a job, or do you think of programming as all the work you need to do (or would having a job interfere with coding )? 5) (Im gonna be virtually slapped for this one) D3D or GL, what do you use? 6) How often do you make a post and or reply to a post here at game dev? 7) Do you want programming to be your career? 8) Which do you perfer, Nvidia or ATI Radeon? Ok, I was gonna go for ten, but I think thats enough Hehe, hope to see your answers! ~no one [edited by - no one on October 23, 2003 1:37:51 AM]

1) I think about which solution would require the least amount of work and do that one

2) I don''t remotivate myself. I entertain myself with something else for the time being.

3) Sleep 1 in the morning, wake-up anywhere from 6 to 10, depending on what day of the week it is.

4) Work part time, in the army reserves, and am a full time university student.

5) So far I''ve used DirectX and SDL. I''d imagine I''ll eventually learn some OpenGL.

6) I post and reply on GD every single day.

7) Not necessarily, not probably.

8) Neither. 3DFX all the way baby!

1. Write it down on paper maybe, or wait awhile and come back to it, hoping I can think of a new approach.

2. I just do something else (study, eat, visit friends ,etc.. ) I find my coding suffers if my force myself to do it.

3. Sleep 12-2, depending on when class is; wake up 7-10, again, depending on class.

4. I used to have a job, but it wasn''t coding related.

5. D3D; it seems to be more widespread

6. Much too ofen Several times a day

7. Yes

8. ATI Radeon; I like jumping on bandwagons, no other reason.

1. The only way, or first way I think of...

2. err...play some computer game...

3. sleep 22h00-23h00, wake up 06h00-09h00.

4. full time student.

5. D3D, because it''s first alphabetically.

6. Post whenever there''s something I can reply to (with an air of knowledge = not often...I just read)

7. Maybe...possibly computer engineering.

8. The first one I get my hands on (I''ll tell you as soon as I get a real graphics card!!)...think I have an old-generic Nvidia, though..

1) If faced with a problem, how do you normally go about solving it?
Depends on the problem. I'll often give it a little bit of consideration and, if it won't matter too much and is possible, try out various things first and experiment with different solutions. Once I have something that works well, I'll keep that (unless some better solution comes up).

2) We all get our days when motivation seems to be gone, what do you do when this happens and how do you re motivate your self?
I get up, walk downstairs, turn on the coffee machine and wait.

3) What time do you normally goto sleep and wake up?
What time do I what?
Edit: Ok, I know what you mean now. My english class is on fridays, from 12:30 to 3:30 pm.

4) (for us younger people) Do you have a job, or do you think of programming as all the work you need to do (or would having a job interfere with coding )?
I have a job at a renovation store. Nothing too fancy, definitively not computer-oriented... I'm quite eagerly looking forward to working as a programmer once I get out of college (or university?). If anything, I value my time spent programming quite a lot.

5) (Im gonna be virtually slapped for this one) D3D or GL, what do you use?
Neither. 3D is not my thing at all. 2D forever! :D

6) How often do you make a post and or reply to a post here at game dev?
Every once in a while. Often, actually. When I have no pressing matters I'll usually have GameDev open or talk with people on IRC.

7) Do you want programming to be your career?
Hell yeah.

8) Which do you perfer, Nvidia or ATI Radeon?
Neither. I don't play games that require either of 'em so I'm quite content with what I have (ATI Rage 128). Hey, I have an old system.

1) If faced with a problem, how do you normally go about solving it?
Try to solve it myself. If that doesn''t help, I google, if that doesn''t help I ask it here, if that doesn''t help I google again, and after that I go mad, and after that, I try some very simple and obivous thing, and then it works.

2) We all get our days when motivation seems to be gone, what do you do when this happens and how do you re motivate your self?
I think that I need to work for my future. For I would love to be a programmer, but at school I don''t learn that, nor do I learn anything else useful, so if I don''t learn it at school, I have to teach it myself.

3) What time do you normally goto sleep and wake up?
in the holidays, 4 o''clock in the night, and I wake up, at 1 o clock after noon. At school days, I go to sleep at midnight, and have to wake up at 6.30, but that''s way too early for me, so it very often happens that I''m not out of my bed before 9 o''clock

4) (for us younger people) Do you have a job, or do you think of programming as all the work you need to do (or would having a job interfere with coding )?
I''ve had some jobs, in the past years, but now I''m 18, and I get student welfare, which is pretty much, so I don''t need a job any more. I would love to have a programming job, but I don''t think there''s anything for me yet.

5) (Im gonna be virtually slapped for this one) D3D or GL, what do you use?
I recently switched to opengl. Direct3D was nice, but I wanted to make my programs cross platfrom (or atleast easy to port, since I''m planning to install linux. Now I use opengl, I really like it, way better than that ugly direct3d

6) How often do you make a post and or reply to a post here at game dev?
Differs from day to day. some days I have a lot of questions, somedays I may be pretty helpful, and some days I don''t post at all.

7) Do you want programming to be your career?
Yes, but I am a bit worried that I won''t get there. But not because I can''t program, but because I won''t have the required degrees.

8) Which do you perfer, Nvidia or ATI Radeon?
I have an nvidia, and I have never used a radeon, well, at least I have not programmed for a radeon.

1) If faced with a problem, how do you normally go about solving it?
hmm, just start doing it, then realise that some other way would have been vastly superior and then do i that way. repeat as required.

2) We all get our days when motivation seems to be gone, what do you do when this happens and how do you re motivate your self?
just do nothing until i get so bored i have to get back to it.

3) What time do you normally goto sleep and wake up?
go to sleep between 12 and 2 usually, get up 11 to 1, or earlier if i have early lectures.

4) (for us younger people) Do you have a job, or do you think of programming as all the work you need to do (or would having a job interfere with coding )?
no job, i''m too lazy

5) (Im gonna be virtually slapped for this one) D3D or GL, what do you use?
GL

6) How often do you make a post and or reply to a post here at game dev?
not very

7) Do you want programming to be your career?
i don''t know, i expect that''s how it''ll turn out

8) Which do you perfer, Nvidia or ATI Radeon?
well ATI are probably better (IMHO), but my latest few cards have been nvidia.

1) Depends on the type of problem. I am good at solving mathematically or algorithmically oriented problems. If the problem is one of those, I will consider the factors, how they relate to one another, and try to come up with an algorithm. In other cases (very complex or non-trivial problems) I will usually collaborate. This could consist of a friend, google, here or a college lecturer. Or my girlfriend, who while she has no experience (or indeed, interest) in programming can sometimes make amazing leaps of intuition which lead to convenient shortcuts.

2) Sleep. See the answer to question 3.

3) I don''t associate "sleep" with "normal". I have been ridiculously insomniac since I was about 16 (when I first went to University - something that caused me to drop out in the end). My habits vary from OKish to downright bad, but at the moment, I tend to stay awake for about 24-30 hours and then sleep for around 12. On a bad week I might only sleep twice. Note that most of this time is unproductive due to being either too tired or having slept for too long. If anyone has a solution to this problem please email me :D

4) I am a fulltime university student, and also work 28 hours per week in a newsagents. I find that work is an excellent place to think up new ideas and to beat out pieces of code that are annoying me (I bring in printouts sometimes)

5) Bah, irrelevant. May I hebitch manslap you first??

6) Rarely. I read gamedev every day, most especially the forums, but I very very rarely reply to anything.

7) That''s the reason I went back to Uni at my age (28). Yes, in other words.

8) Silicon Graphics, if we''re going for the biggest penis award.

Is this for a project or something, or do you just want to know your fellow board warriors better?

RM.

------------------------------------------------------------
Yes. it''''s true, I DO wield the ugly stick. And I see I have beaten you with it before!

1) If faced with a problem, how do you normally go about solving it?

I would look for the best way I could find. Normally I get one implementation done, then find a better one and use that.

2) We all get our days when motivation seems to be gone, what do you do when this happens and how do you re motivate your self?

I toss a tennis ball against the wall (lightly) and think about what I need to do.

3) What time do you normally goto sleep and wake up?

Sleep -> 10:00 PM
Wake -> Too early 7:00 AM
(Both in EST)

4) (for us younger people) Do you have a job, or do you think of programming as all the work you need to do (or would having a job interfere with coding )?

Dont have a job yet, but I tried.. I guess it would interfere with programming but money is money.

5) (Im gonna be virtually slapped for this one) D3D or GL, what do you use?

Both . I am trying to learn as much as I can of both of the above, as well as SDL. Maybe thats why its taking me so long to make a simple game.

6) How often do you make a post and or reply to a post here at game dev?

Not too often

7) Do you want programming to be your career?

YES!!

8) Which do you perfer, Nvidia or ATI Radeon?

I would say ATI Radeon, cause that is what I have right now (9800 PRO )

1) If faced with a problem, how do you normally go about solving it?
Depends on the problem, I think about it a bit, maybe ask for help, search the internet or library or references. Maybe sleep.

2) We all get our days when motivation seems to be gone, what do you do when this happens and how do you re motivate your self?
I had a hard time motivating myself but lately it''s come quite easy. I guess it''s cos I suck at most things in life so I just wnat to do really well in something so I keep going

3) What time do you normally goto sleep and wake up?
Sleep? 4-6 sometime. Wake up, 9 rarely, if needed, 12 usually, 2 often but try not to

4) (for us younger people) Do you have a job, or do you think of programming as all the work you need to do (or would having a job interfere with coding )?
Don''t have a job at the moment but desperately need one. My last one drained my time so I couldnt do much coding though

5) (Im gonna be virtually slapped for this one) D3D or GL, what do you use?
I''m still a n00b but I learnt some OGL, at the moment I''m using SDL

6) How often do you make a post and or reply to a post here at game dev?
I read or browse the forums every hour or so I''m home. I reply once a day or less often. I would like to post more but I only post if I have something useful to say (ok so not always, I guess this can''t be counted as useful)

7) Do you want programming to be your career?
Yes and no. I don''t think I could handle the stress or difficulty so at the moment just as a hobbie

8) Which do you perfer, Nvidia or ATI Radeon?
Well I''m still on a riva tnt 2 so I would say radeon as to me their latest cards have all been better than nvidia equivalents, but bad experiences with ati drivers

1) If faced with a problem, how do you normally go about solving it?
The internet is a great place. Chances are that everything you want to do (unless it is your professional career to do the opposite of what I am saying) has been done already. Sites devoted to solving problems help a whole lot.

2) We all get our days when motivation seems to be gone, what do you do when this happens and how do you re motivate your self?
It depends what I am doing. If I know how to do something, my motivation usually doesn''t go away, as far as programming goes. My motivation usually only withers away when I am trying to learn a new technique and it is frustrating me.

3) What time do you normally goto sleep and wake up?
Sleep - 11PM
Wake - 8AM

4) (for us younger people) Do you have a job, or do you think of programming as all the work you need to do (or would having a job interfere with coding )?
Don''t have a job at the moment. Im still in highschool, and recently my schedule has been very hectic. I was a telemarketer at one point, but holding down a job and going to school just isn''t for me.

5) (Im gonna be virtually slapped for this one) D3D or GL, what do you use?
I havn''t done any graphics programming.

6) How often do you make a post and or reply to a post here at game dev?
I rarely post.

7) Do you want programming to be your career?
Yes. Unlike many people who come here, I do not want to be a game programmer. I want to develop applications for the real world; not in-corporation things, but applications that consumers will use, like Excel or Word, or a browser or something. You know, applications >_>

8) Which do you perfer, Nvidia or ATI Radeon?
Either. At the moment, I''m using an ATI Radeon 9500 Pro.

1) If faced with a problem, how do you normally go about solving it?
I look at the problem methodically, trying to discover what causes the problem and then worrying about how to fix it. If its a real stumper I consult the api and then google it.

2) We all get our days when motivation seems to be gone, what do you do when this happens and how do you re motivate your self?
I really enjoy digital art. Thats probally because I see something that is awsome and know that I can never make something that good. I also like to boot up Return to Castle Wolfenstin and frag a few people.

3) What time do you normally goto sleep and wake up?
A normal day...11:30 and 6... When I am engrossed in finishing a project... 2 am - 11

4) (for us younger people) Do you have a job, or do you think of programming as all the work you need to do (or would having a job interfere with coding )?
Focusing on school...looking for a job that has at least some remote connection to computers...

5) (Im gonna be virtually slapped for this one) D3D or GL, what do you use?
GL

6) How often do you make a post and or reply to a post here at game dev?
This is my first post in months. I read, read and read. I don''t have much to contribute...

7) Do you want programming to be your career?
Yes

8) Which do you perfer, Nvidia or ATI Radeon?
I have never used a ATI...I just migrate towards nvidia for some reason...

1. I generally think about it when I''m supposed to be getting something else done.
2. I sit and try to get my brain to stop thinking about anything (kind of like meditating). Then I think about what I''m trying to do. It''s a lot easier to focus when you get good at this, at least for me.
3. Well, I''m in high school still, so I get up at 6:30 every weekday, usually later on weekends. I get to bed from 10:00 to 11:00, depending on how busy I am.
4. Aside from school (about = to a job) I work at Mc Donalds because I need money. Once out of college, I plan to program for a living. (plan...)
5. no
6. Irregularly
7. Yes, definitely. I want to program video games (of course) but also I am very interested in writing and designing them. I hope(...) to someday start a video game production company.
8. my computer = POS

1) If faced with a problem, how do you normally go about solving it?
try to solve it on my own -> see it dosn''t work -> read information (book, google) or talk to coworkers/teammembers about the topic -> try again -> if it still doesn''t work go mad and have a look into other peoples source-code after that

2) We all get our days when motivation seems to be gone, what do you do when this happens and how do you re motivate your self?
playing good computer-games (often older ones)
playing rl-games (chess,GURPS)
reading books
smoke a cigarette
lots of things that have nothing to do with my project!

3) What time do you normally goto sleep and wake up?
sleep : 11:00-02:00
wake up : 06:30-07:30 (flexible work time rules!)
09:00-15:00 at weekends

4) (for us younger people) Do you have a job, or do you think of programming as all the work you need to do (or would having a job interfere with coding )?
i do have a job (still trainee though) interfering with coding, but its only SQL and PL/SQL.. just usual database coding for inhouse busines solutions

5) (Im gonna be virtually slapped for this one) D3D or GL, what do you use?
GL in combination with SDL!

6) How often do you make a post and or reply to a post here at game dev?
i think this is just my 3rd post or so.. usually i only read because i don''t have that much knowledge yet

7) Do you want programming to be your career?
hell yes!
its a stressfull career which will damage your brain. i just love it! =)

8) Which do you perfer, Nvidia or ATI Radeon?
Nvidia because of (IMO) good drivers, will check out ATI soon
