Texture blending

I know that there are certain ways of alpha blending in Direct 3D which are more efficient and most likely faster. Rather than basically switching everything on and hoping to hell that I am not killing some grpahics cards, I would like to know if there are references out there that talk about the best approach to setting texture stages up. This is more a question on whether there is some sort reference to help make things as GFX card friendly as possible. Andrew
