Newbie writes and exporter + model viewer!
Help. I am a final year BSc Virtual Reality design student making a 3dsmax exporter and a model viewer for my major project. I have a small understanding of C++ and Direct x. I hope to program my model viewer in OpenGL so that it will run on a Linux PS2.
The problem is I don''t know where to start with this! Any tips would be much appreciated!

P.S. I have started by installing all the max sdk and the plugin wizard for Vissual C++. I have used the plugin wizard to create a exporter project. It will compile with no errors but it wont build! I''m getting an error message something like "can not find build.obj". Does anyone know where I''m going wrong?

Can''t help you with the build error since I can''t seem to recall why one would get it. Sounds like your project has been setup wrong.
Anyway, about the OpenGL stuff, have a look at nehe.gamedev.net. There is alot of tutorials on OpenGL programming there.

I''m working my way through the NeHe tutorials right now, in fact! I think that the build error is because I haven''t set the project up right. I carn''t find much help when it comes to setting up the project right.
Anyone else got any more advice?

Edit: (Ops, guess I should have read the post more carefully, sorry.)
Then I don't know what could be wrong. Is the wizard setting up a dll project or what does it do?

It uses the MAX sdk LIB files. Which I have linked to the project correctly. IT provides an outline of an exporter program. You can add the file extension you want into the code provided. Then I can get it to compile okay. But I then should be able to build a .dle file. Add it to the Max plugin directory, then open max and export to my file extension. It would work but the exported file would not contain any model info. That has to be programed by me!!
In vissual C++ my project has "build document" which I think is wrong it should say "build .dle"

Yes one that will be made by myself. Sorted the visual C++ error now!!
But have been adviced to write it useing the maxscript instead of the max sdk. Then spend my time on the model viewer!
