Template Factories?

Howdy, I saw on a programming web page around Feb. about using a combination of Templates and statics in derived classes as a sort of guid. When creating an instance of the object like object< guid >, it would be able to create an instance of the correct derived class. That is about all the detail I can remember on it, and have been trying to find a link to it, but without success. Does this ring a bell with anyone? If anyone knows any clues, like technical names to this technique, that would also be helpful. Thanks!
